Bowen is a gentle yet incredibly efficient hands-on therapy that can positively stimulate the body to heal very quickly. While supporting the body as a whole it addresses the underlying physical, chemical, emotional and mental causes of chronic and acute illness. Whether you are in pain from an injury, suffer from a chronic condition, want a tune-up for a sports competition or just rejuvenate physically and mentally, Bowen Therapy can support your needs.

Each session typically involves a series of gentle rolling motions along the muscles, tendons, and fascia.  Bowen's distinctive features are the minimal nature of the physical intervention and the pauses incorporated in the treatment. These pauses allow the body to "reset" and rebalance itself.

After a brief consultation you will be invited to lie down on a massage table. Moves can be done through thin and loose clothing. It's recommended to drink some water before the Bowen session as effective fascial release requires the adequate hydration of cells and tissues.

Many issues are resolved within 3-5 sessions but some chronic or complex conditions can take longer. It is recommended to do the first 3 sessions within 4 weeks, 7-10 days apart.

Every body is different, so response will be unique to each individual but most feel a deep sense of relaxation. The session itself is just the beginning and you can expect the body to keep processing 3-10 days following your treatment. Some patients can feel worse before feeling better and this simply means change is taking place. A gentle walk or swim can help to integrate the work.

• Avoid sitting for too long and make sure you get up and walk a few steps. This includes when driving - stop and walk around or run an errand.

• Be mindful when sitting and standing that your weight is evenly distributed as to not place strain unevenly in your lower limbs, low back or hips.

• Heavy exercise should be avoided immediately after Bowen. Walking or swimming is ideal. For athletes try and limit as much as possible exerting the areas of concern that have received treatment to allow for healing time.

• Drinking water helps to flush out any waste.

• Avoid heating pads, hot tubs or ice packs. A brief, warm shower is acceptable. Avoid any self-applied physical therapy.

• Avoid other therapies while Bowen is being integrated into the body. Not because those therapies lack value but in order to know the effect of each.

• Stay hydrated, drink water.

• A gentle walk each day is recommended.

Tom Bowen (1916-1982) started developing the Bowen Technique in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia. After serving in World War II he became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering. Even though Mr. Bowen had no formal healthcare training, he had a unique awareness of how certain moves on the body could result in particular effects. Over the years he refined the effectiveness of his observations. It is reported that he performed 13,000 treatments in a year with an 80% success rate. Mr. Bowen passed on what he had learned to six practitioners and now Bowen is practiced in more than 40 countries. He always stated that the therapy was simply 'A gift from God".
